Harbours have traditionally been considered as points where cargo was transferred to ships, and consequently dependent on a given territory or "hinterland". Thanks to the growing globalization of the world's economy, this idea is slowly changing, as is the case of Santos (Brazil), one of the most important harbours in Latin American and of Mercosur. In fact, Santos' harbour plays a relevant role in providing energy to the financial and commercial activities of Sao Paulo State, and its contribution is fundamental in consolidating the inner transport network of Mercosur. Besides, it functions as an axis organizing exchanges between the European Union and most of the countries included in Mercosur.
