Zusammenfassung

After the Jesuits were expelled from Orihuela, their rich estates and buildings were administered by the “Junta Municipal de Temporalidades”. The latter proceeded to sell them at public auction, although some legal problems delayed the transfer to the new owners. The manor house “La Marquesa” thus remained under local control from 1767 to 1784, a period which saw the end of “enfiteusis” -a regime under which the Jesuits established a colonization hamlet. Enfiteusis was replaced by short term lease, an option which brought about a greater control over farm production, although it detained population development.
