Abstract
The relationship between perfectionism and school refusal is an area of research with few studies. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between Socially Prescribed Perfectionism(SPP) and school refusal based on factors II (escape the social aversion and / or situations of school evaluation) and III (search for attention significant others) that justify this behavior. The sample consisted of 733 Spanish students between 8 and 12 years (M= 10.03, SD= 1.25). The instruments used to establish this relationship was the Child and Adolescent Perfectionism Scale, to measure perfectionism, and School Refusal Assessment Scale for Children-Revised, to assess school refusal. The results showed that students who had high scores in school refusal, due to the need to escape the social aversion and / or evaluation situations, had significantly higher scores on SPP. Similarly, students with high school refusal based on seeking care for their loved ones, had significantly higher scores on SPP. Thus, the results indicate that there is a positive relationship between these two variables. These results could be considered by teachers and school or clinical psychologists in designing strategies for prevention and intervention in cases of school refusal.
