Abstract

The analysis of masculinities has incorporated a wide diversity of research fields, including the making and expression of gender identities, roles and relationships through the Internet. In this article, we focus on the specific virtual domain of online dating web pages. These pages have some peculiarities that can be suitable for the analysis of users’ ideals of masculinity or, at least, for the analysis of traits that users think women prefer. A qualitative thematic analysis has been applied to a sample of men’s profiles from two Spanish dating websites: Meetic.es and AdoptaUnTio.es. Among the results it can be highlighted the presence of some characteristics of the so-called positive masculinities, along with traditional components of the hegemonic masculinity. The latter ones are characterised by a minimum introspection work on the part of the users.
