Abstract
The origin and distribution of the genus Medicago Secc. Dendrotelis in the Mediterranean Basin is described and data are presented about the main morphological differences between the species M. arbórea, M. citrina and M. strasseri (branching pattern, leaf size, flower, pod and seed characteristics). M. citrina stands out against the other two species because its has larger leaves, pods and seeds, but also because it is restricted to the western side of the Mediterranean Basin, just opposite to the distribution centre of M. arbórea and M. strasseri (Aegean Sea).
