Aproximación a las noticias sobre inmigración en la prensa gratuita desde una perspectiva visual y lingüística

Résumé

This research intends to analyse the language used by the media in a sample pieces of news on immigration published in free newspapers in Alicante. For this reason, I will explore the main strategies used to make meaning in different multimodal texts related to immigration in order to analyse the main linguistic and visual resources used by journalists to create a particular view of immigrants in the texts under analysis. I will pay attention to the way in which each semiotic resource has evolved to be used with other semiotic resources, i.e., the relationships between the written text and the image, which has implications in the way readers create meaning. The corpus of examples belongs to different free newspapers delivered in Alicante, the city with the third highest number of immigrants in Spain. I will explore the reasons why the journalist chooses some linguistic and visual forms instead of others and the influence of these forms in the creation of meaning. The analysis will point out that the linguistic and visual aspects analysed create a negative image of immigration and contribute to a discourse of exclusion.
