Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess intercultural sensitivity in a sample (N = 198) of elementary students as well as to examine possible differences due to ethnic background, age, and gender. The Chen and Starosta original scale for secondary students was adapted for this study. An exploratory factorial analysis was performed to identify two factors that explain 35% of the variance observed and that allow differentiate between a Positive and a Negative Emotional Response to Intercultural Relations. Results show that respondents have a good intercultural sensitivity but associated to a passive attitude towards the interaction. These results are explained in terms of the existence of a superficial pluralism. The between-group differences observed made recommendable to promote early intervention programs to develop specific intercultural competence habilities.
