Zusammenfassung

In the Spanish province of Alicante, the traditional bases of industry have clearly declined in favour of other emerging territories. Businesses are now organised to allow greater operative freedom in manufacturing, thanks to innovative measures introduced throughout the organisation, production and marketing procedures in industrial companies. Such changes have led to networked manufacturing, due to a greater dispersion of production units. Innovations that were previously only found in a technopolis or science park are now available anywhere, converting the most well-informed cities and areas (i.e. the best equipped and most well communicated) into particularly attractive locations for new businesses. Research facilities, centres for applying and transferring knowledge, areas where multinational companies have established themselves and the concentration of logistical services all form part of these highly sought-after new business zones. This is the case of Alicante’s metropolitan area in its sub-regional context.
