Abstract

Spain was unsuccessful in ensuring vaccination for all its infant population during the XIX Century. Using as a case-study the city of Alicante we deal, in this, work with the main causes of this failure. The absence of proper public health services, the opposition or the neglect of the popu-lation and some technical obstacles were the main reasons for the very irregular vaccination prac-tices in Alicante.
