Abstract

n this paper the evolution of the Spanish footwear industry during the last decades is analysed. For that purpose, together with the examination of the existing literature, a survey with interviews to different agents from the sector, was developed in spring and summer 2003. The relevant factors that have led the sector to the present situation are reviewed. Particularly, we focus on the evolution of the industry that has three different phases, and on its context characterised by an increasing competitiveness on prices, a rising of quality demands and a differentiation and renewal of desings. In addition, following the Industrial District perspective, we study the participation of the Spanish sector in a mature market, its production reorganisation, its flexible specialisation, and its adaptation to the increasing internatiional competitive pressure.
