Abstract
The content of this paper lies within the framework of the relations between tourism and environment in the context of the reform and restructuring of tourism strategies planned in Torrevieja, a consolidated tourist resort. This town is the main tourist destination of the south of Alicante and one of the most important in the Valencian Community. In particular, some of the local government initiatives regarding land use planning for public use of the La Mata and Torrevieja Lagoons Natural Park are explained. This example shows that it is necessary to take into account wider land use planning approaches to make the most of the protected natural areas and in order to improve the quality of the tourist services offered.
