Zusammenfassung

Specialised historical works on the history of the Church and religious beliefs emanate predominantly from church circles and tend to place greater emphasis on political and structural aspects to the detriment of cultural analysis. During the long post-war period in Spain, ecclesiastical and secular authorities endeavoured to create a symbolic universe which would legitimise the dictatorship, and in which religion played a central role. The nineteen-sixties and seventies witnessed the birth of a new religiosity, headed by dissident priests and laymen, who would ultimately call into question the political regime itself. This article also examines the links between politics and religion by considering protestant minorities and anticlericalism.
