Abstract
The action at the head of the Ministry of the Interior made by Eleuterio Maisonnave -Emilio Castelar's personal friend and greatest associate- may be considered as one of the clearest signs of the republican conservatism during the last months of the First Republic. This study analyses one the most outstanding aspects of his ministerial work: the National Militia's reorganization as a result of the law of September 2nd, 1873, whose results in practice -especially, the changes of the social composition- have been assessed with the concrete analysis of the reorganization of the battalion of the National Militia in Alicante.
