Resumen

Of the 14 000 hectares of salt-bearing land in the province of Alicante, 4700 were successfully fertilised in the first third of the 18th century, and the rest formed a broad unproductive plain. Following the 1979 Act concerning the Basis for the Cultivation of Extensive Areas, it was thought that these saltpetrous and marshy lands could be reclaimed; the Plan for their Cultivation was approved in 1952, and initially it affected 1645 hectares. The 5 yr period allowed for this reclamation, was long enough to set up the basic network and to wash the soil, but the water drawn up to the surface for this latter purpose, in the Sierra de Callosa, proved to have such a high salt content that it could not be used. It is hoped that the initial goals will be reached by using water from the Tagus-Segura Transference.-from English summary
