Resumo
The construction of a harbor in the bay at Torrevieja has been one of the most important economic asperations of the inhabitants of the area known as the Bajo Segura since the mid-19th century. From its inception, the plan has been considered the ideal solution for the infrastructure problems related to the water transport of the salt mined from the lagoons salt fields in the area surrounding the city. Furthermore, with this project the region hoped to create an international maritime link which would provide an outhet for the abundant produce grown in the area. These two factor were key to keeping the harbor project alive in spite of constant delays and postponements in getting underway. It wouldn't be until well into the 20th century that these goals would be met thanks to the impetus of the salt trade.
