Abstract

The fortifications of Alicante were never developed to overcome the destructive power of the artillery. The bombing suffered by the city in 1691 by the French army under the command of Major D'Estrees, evidenced the ineffectiveness of its walls. Only the castle, the last stronghold of the city, was able to maintain a long siege in any of the studied centuries. However, in 1804, a new fortification project was developed, while the expansion of the port was being carried out. This full paper exposes the approach of its fortification although it did not get built as so many other projects developed for the city of Alicante.
