This paper presents a methodology of a teaching and learning process that offers students of the Degree in Marine Sciences a new chance to assimilate concepts and solve problems related to the subject Introduction to Meteorology. The proposed methodology has been developed based on the use of free software applications focused on the handling, management and visualization of numerical modeling data available in an open format, and it is intended to be implemented in the classroom during the 2016-2017 academic year. The objective of this proposal is double. On the one hand, we would like to evaluate the academic performance while, on the other hand, we would like to obtain a measure of the acquisition of knowledge and skills required to address and resolve problems and other issues related to the field of Meteorology. The results obtained in a first approximation indicate a greater involvement and motivation in the learning process as well as a better assimilation of the concepts studied by the students. 100 % of them passed the suggested test using this methodology, with an average grade of good. These results encourage us to further deepening in the implementation of this methodology. In this regard, we have been selected a significant concept for the next academic year whose understanding is essential for describing the state of the atmosphere and for the interpretation of weather maps. The aim is to delve into this approach in order to further contribute to the improvement of skills of particular relevance for the fulfillment of the student's future professional development.
