Resumen

Juana Francés (Alicante, 1924 - Madrid, 1990) is still a largely undiscovered artist for the general public; however, she enjoyed an interesting and serious career, and was a participant in the post-Spanish Civil War generation of artists -and the only women to form part of the important group known as El Paso- who managed to introduce Spain into the international contemporary art scene. She usually opted for informal and material abstraction, although she did not stay stagnant in this tendency, and continued to evolve into new formal languages and techniques true to her investigational character and her commitment to the authentic expression of herself. These doctoral investigation offers a critical examination of Francés´ art trajectory developed in four different style periods til the end of her life, based on the detailed study of over five hundred pieces, the artist's own comments, the works of critics and scholars, the exhaustive documentation on her presence in art exhibits and events and the valuable memories of friends and family who revealed important data regarding process of working or inspiration for it. All these data were essential to value objectively her trajectory not only in the Spanish Art scenario, but in the International one.
