Abstract

The objective of this thesis is to determine the characteristics of battered women, batterers, and the relation between these characteristics and spousal abuse situation. In other words, this paper studies the existence of personal characteristics, family, economic and social aspects of women who are abused by their spouses and are living in an abusive environment in silence and evaluate the significance and intensity of such violence in Tehran, the capital of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The results showed that there are no distinguishing factors separating women who are victims of partner violence other than socioeconomic characteristics. Therefore, these characteristics can be used to identify risk groups among female demographics who need special attention. Also, in this investigation no characteristics were found which would differentiate between violent spouses and non-violent ones.
