Abstract

The population of Extremadura is characterized by the increase of elderly people in front of the decline of children, it causes a change in the demographic structure called as population ageing. The reasons of this process must be attributed to declining fertility rates, increasing life expectancy and, occasionally, to the migration of the working age population .The main demographic challenges are decreasing population growth and increasing of the people aged 65 years and older. In order to improve knowledge of population ageing, it has performed an exhaustive analysis of evolution and characteristics of the population of Extremadura from early twentieth century to the present. One of the main objectives of this study is to discover the causes and consequences of demographic aging and to determine the various degrees of aging that have the region. In a second chapter examines the spatial distribution of healthcare services in Extremadura, specifically geriatric care and nursing homes in the local and supra-local areas, in order to achieve optimization between supply and demand focused care of the elderly.
