Resum

Relations between Europe and Safavid Persia during the Early Modern Period were shaped by the conflicts and alliances that arose against the Ottoman Empire and between the different actors both east of the Ottoman Empire and in Europe. But these relations were not limited to the military. In religious or cultural matters, as well as in commercial and diplomatic matters, the relations between the European Axis and Safavid Persia were intense. From the fifteenth century the circulation of Persian emissaries to Europe and the presence of Europeans in Persia were constant. This book is the result of the debate inspired by the research project “The Other Europe: Eastern Europeans and Safavid Communities in Spain and the Wider World”. In this book, different specialists analyse various aspects of the relations between Eastern Europe, Safavid Persia and the Iberian world. We learn about the relations between Poland and Safavid Persia; the exiles, conversions, and population movement in European territories bordering the Ottoman Empire; the influence of the Spanish monarchy on religious structures in the Caucasus; how missionaries played a key role in understanding these relations; and the written production of Jesuits and Carmelites on Safavid Persia. This volume is a continuation of The Spanish Monarchy and Safavid Persia in the Early Modern Period, the first volume of the series. And now this second volume is intended to continue the analysis of many aspects of Europe????s complex relations with Safavid Persia in the Early Modern Period.
