Abstract
In this paper, we propose an interpretation of a specific type of half-men (that type one can find in tales and myths which can be reduced to the structural functions of V. Propp), and connect it to some social institutions like the rites of initiation of the "primitive" cultures. These social practices, associated with a dual vision of cosmos, offer the basis to seek the origin of some of these figures, specially the concept of division which is subjacent to them. Finally, I try to present that this ideal representation founds the explanation in particular social, economic and cosmological order, rather than in innate ideas or archetypes.
