Abstract
We have performed the morphological, chemical and mineralogical characterisation of the ashes of a Posidonia oceanica residue similar to that extracted in Alicante Spanish beach cleaning tasks. At 600°C are obtained the first ashes with a content in oxides (Fe2O3 -magemite- and CaO2) that would explain why the by-product has some residual cementing capacity. At 700°C, CaO and MgO additionally start to appear as a result of the decarbonation of the particled material adhered to the plant. At 800°C, the residue will have totally decomposed into oxides acquiring a mineralogy similar to that of an DL80 construction lime. The puzzolanity analysis reveals that mortars prepared with those ashes would not gain long-term strength.
